What to Expect

Living on Campus:

All Summer Launch participants will live on-campus in a residence hall. Students will be assigned roommates and will be expected to abide by all typical residence hall regulations during the summer. Several graduate level students will live in the hall with the participants to provide supervision and various residence hall activities.

Classes:

All Summer Launch participants will take 2 classes: a UNS 101 class and CST 105 OR PSC 100*. Students will be assigned to classes based on anticipated major and are expected to be active participants and learners in each class.

Course descriptions:

  • University Studies (UNS) 101

This course exposes students to essential competencies for academic and personal success, including knowledge of university environment, self-awareness, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.

  • Communications Studies (CST) 105: Introduction to Communications Studies

Introduction to the principles and skills for effective communication in the contexts of public speaking, interpersonal communication, and small group/team communication. Videotaping used to enhance personal growth.

  • Political Science (PSC) 100: American Politics

Organization and behavior of the institutions, groups, and persons in American national government and politics. Introductory level course.

*Note: Classes are subject to change based on availability.

Academic Skills:

Various resource activities will provide students the opportunity to learn how to become successful at the collegiate level. Workshop topics may include:

  • Using technology on campus (setting up email, navigating blackboard, and using your laptop)
  • UNCG campus resources including the Speaking Center, Writing Center, Career Center and the Office of Leadership and Service Learning
  • Apply Learning Styles
  • Getting involved in Student Life

Outside the Classroom:

Summer Launch participants will also experience the Greensboro area through various sporting, cultural, and social events. Examples of past activities include:

  • Team Building at Piney Lake
  • Greensboro Grasshoppers Baseball
  • Emerald Pointe Water Park
  • Eastern Music Festival
  • Greensboro Natural Science Center
  • Karaoke and pizza socials
  • Spartan Country BBQ
